Epilepsy and Sport

Jérôme - Epilepsy Advocate

I have applied the philosophy of being prepared, consistent and determined that I gained from sports to working on my epilepsy. It´s been a challenge, but I am now at a point where I am pleased with my seizure control. I have continued to be active. If I´m not, I feel bad in general. Certainly, there are more risks to doing sports than lying in your bed, but you have to decide what your body is capable of, with the advice and support of your doctor.

I´ve participated in triathalons and swimming competitions, and currently work as a physical therapist. I have two people that I train who heard that I have epilepsy, and they revealed to me that they have it as well. I think that no one wants the idea that they are "ill" to get out. It is a bad thing when we are not treated as normal people.

There are benefits to physical fitness for most people. I can´t tell any person what to do, because sports may not always be the best thing for you. You must feel it in your body and you and your doctor must decide if you are up for it. Seizure control is a factor in deciding when to participate in sports. Many people with epilepsy have an aura that tells them when they might have a seizure and that is a way that your body tells you what you can do or not.

I went to a program recently to speak about my experiences with epilepsy, and many parents came to talk to me afterward. I can only say that they should talk with their child´s doctor about what will be safe for their children. But I can say from my own experience that sports and physical activity helped me to feel less isolated, I felt that I "fit in" more with other children.

When I was a child, it was important to me to compete with others my own age because it made me feel that I was the same as my friends. I would push myself to win, to show I was "normal". As I´ve gotten older, I have been less focused on winning and more interested in practicing sports to relieve stress. It makes me very happy to get in the pool and relax. I have a reliable aura, which is something I rely on to tell me if I am pushing myself too hard. I stop whatever I´m doing immediately and rest.

I believe that sports can improve your attitude, as well as your physical condition. There are risks, which you should discuss with your doctor, and remember that it´s different for everyone. Certainly, swimming may not be something that is advisable for everyone. But, I do encourage everyone to find a fitness regimen that will motivate them and keep them active. Walking, running, golf or tennis may work for you. I wish you luck in achieving your goals.
